ASEM Education 1st Senior Officials’ Meeting

Dear ASEM partners and stakeholders,

On behalf of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your attendance at the 1st Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM1) for the 6th ASEM Education Ministers’ Meeting (ASEMME6), which took place on 9-10 November 2016, in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

With 96 participants from 39 ASEM partners and 7 stakeholders, SOM1 aimed to lay the foundation for a successful ASEMME6, which will ensure a forward-looking tangible cooperation between Asia and Europe. All of the participants showed their enthusiasm through the discussion on how to cope with the changes and challenges in the coming era of the so-called 4th Industrial Revolution. We also agreed upon the achievements of the ASEM Education Process and tried to search for more fruitful cooperation and greater visibility to enhance educational collaboration between and within the two regions. We further engaged in meaningful dialogues on the four key areas in the ASEM Education Process: (a) quality assurance and recognition; (b) engaging business and industry in education; (c) balanced mobility; and (d) lifelong learning including technical and vocational education and training.

It was especially delightful to share the Seoul Declaration and the MOOC initiative, proposals put forward by the Korean Ministry of Education to mark the 10 years of the ASEM Education Process at ASEMME6. I appreciate your constructive feedback and active engagement in a bid to realize the potentials of the ASEM Education Process. I would like to assure you that Korea will stay committed to sharing its insight with ASEM partners and stakeholders and to serving as a bridge between Asia and Europe.

I strongly believe that the passion you showed during SOM1 will certainly contribute to the successful hosting of ASEMME6, which will be held on 9-10 May in Seoul next year. Under the theme “Collaboration for the Next Decade: from Common Perspectives to Effective Fulfillment”, which earned your generous support at SOM1, I hope that ASEMME6 will be a venue where ASEM partners and stakeholders build up the momentum to commemorate the 10-year history of the ASEM Education Process and prepare for the next decade.

I, once again, would like to convey my deep gratitude for your great support in developing the agenda and theme of ASEMME6, as well as reinforcing Asia-Europe cooperation in the field of education. I look forward to further collaboration with you.

Yours sincerely,

Lee Young
Vice Minister
Ministry of Education
Republic of Korea
